Chemistry Summary

You already know quite a lot about the world of Chemistry; we all do.  Our lives depend on Chemistry in action – in our bodies, our food and our environment.   Materials we use everyday such as plastics, paints and dyes are the result of chemical research.  Artificial fibres, new medicines and even microchips that run computers could not have been developed without the skill and knowledge of chemists.   

So while we are all users of Chemistry, for chemists themselves there is the added dimension of challenge and new discovery – the opportunity to directly influence the quality of life. 

Science never stands still.  The 21st century will be an important time to understand and develop those processes that so critically affect the future for us all.

How you will study

Through the course learning will take many forms from traditional lessons with supporting practical work.  There will be many opportunities to work in groups but resilience in independent study will be developed in preparation for further studies.   ‘Required practical’s will be completed during the appropriate topics, and at least 15% of the marks for A-level Chemistry are based on these practical’s. 

Component breakdown

Paper 1– Physical and Inorganic – 2hr exam (35%).  

Paper 2– Physical and Organic – 2hr exam (35%).  

Paper 3 – 2hr exam (30%) 

Physical: Atomic Structure, Amount of Substance, Bonding, Energetics, Kinetics, Redox, Thermodynamics, Rate equations, Equilibrium constant, Electrochemistry and Acids and Bases 

Inorganic: Group 7 elements, Reaction of period 3 elements, Transition metals and Ion reaction analysis  

Organic: Naming compounds, Alkanes, Haloalkanes, Alkenes, Alcohols, Isomerism, Carboxylic acids, Biochemistry and Analysis.  

You will complete twelve required practicals over the two-year course, handing in laboratory write-ups for your teacher to mark. These will need to be up to a sufficient standard so that you achieve a practical endorsement for this course.
